IP ratings: choose safe and moisture-resistant bathroom lighting

When choosing lighting for damp areas, such as bathrooms, it is important to consider the IP rating of a fixture.

What is an IP rating?

IP stands for “Ingress Protection” and indicates the extent to which a fixture is protected against dust and moisture. The IP rating consists of two digits:

• The first digit describes the protection against solid objects, such as dust. It ranges from 0 to 6, where 0 means no protection at all and 6 means completely dustproof.
• The second digit describes the protection against moisture, such as water droplets or immersion. From 0 to 8, where 0 means no protection at all and 8 means usable under water.

Where an IP20 fixture is sufficient in the living room or bedroom, a humid environment requires higher protection.

IP zones in the bathroom

The bathroom is a damp environment with different safety zones. Think of zones where there is direct contact with water or zones where condensation accumulates. It is therefore important to choose the right lighting based on the specific requirements of each zone.

In zones 0 and 1, it is also necessary to use low-voltage fixtures that operate at 12 volts.
